Different Types Of Wall Cracks And Filling Techniques
Wall cracks are generally formed due to many reasons such as low-quality building materials, massive weather changes, earthquakes etc. Cracks play a major role in creating structural damages. If you are planning to purchase a building, then you should hire a Building Inspectors team for identifying cracks and taking the necessary steps to fix those cracks. According to them, cracks are categorised into three types. Here we will discuss these types and a common way to fill them.
Brick Mortar Cracks
These types of building cracks are common. They can be generally formed horizontally and vertically and mostly found at the brick-mortar joints of the building. According to the crack inspectors, these cracks are appeared due to sulphate attack. These cracks can be seen in old constructions. So, before purchasing a building, these cracks should be identified properly.
Cross Joint Or Main Wall Cracks
This type of crack is generally formed due to poor bonding between the main wall and cross wall of a building. If the quality of bonding materials are poor then this crack starts appearing. So, to fix this crack, high-quality materials can be used.
Wall Masonry & RCC Column Vertical Cracks
These vertical cracks generally occur due to creep, shrinkage and elastic deformation in reinforced concrete column or RCC. They also appear because of the differential movement between wall masonry and RCC. The temperature variation is one of the main reasons behind these cracks. They are mostly found in the new constructions. The cracks are generally hidden by creating grooves in the wall masonry and RCC.
How To Fill The Wall Cracks?
- Enlarge The Wall Crack: In this step, you need to enlarge the wall cracks by using a hammer and chisel. This technique is also called undercutting.
- Clean Dust And Debris: Once you have enlarged the cracks, you need to remove the dust, debris and tiny concrete pieces from the surface with the help of a wire brush. You can also remove them by using the vacuum cleaner. After cleaning, you have to rinse the surface with water properly.
- Apply The Primer: In this step, a concrete bonding adhesive primer can be applied to the surface area. You can apply the primer by using a paintbrush. This brush helps to spread the layers of primer properly. After that, multiple coats of the concrete patching can be applied by using a putty knife. However, a pointed trowel is also used instead of a putty knife. Then press the layer of coatings and repeat the process until the cracks are properly filled.
Now you have a proper idea about different types of wall cracks and cracks removing techniques. The crack inspections are very essential before purchasing a property.
